International Women's Day 2010 - Shoalhaven

International Women's Day in the Shoalhaven

Our theme this year is Empowering Women to End Poverty by 2015. International Women's Day has a long history, and there is much to celebrate. However there is still much to be done to ensure women the world over enjoy the freedoms and rights, culturally and legally, that every individual should have. IWD 2010 is about recognising women’s contributions and realising and protecting their rights. Achieving gender equality and empowering women is key to success in reaching the Millennium Development Goals defined by the UN in 2000, and in particular the goal to end poverty by 2015.

To promote and support International Women's Day 2010 (IWD 2010) in the Shoalhaven, a number of events are happening. A variety of activities and gatherings in and around Nowra, including Tomerong and Ulladulla, ensure there is something for every woman, young and... not so young.

Our gallery has some photos of last year's IWD activities. Please contact us if you have some photos of IWD 2010 activities you would like to see added, or if you have an enquiry. Each event has a contact listed for specific enquiries about that event.

Each year, activities supporting International Women's Day in the Shoalhaven are organised by our committee. We thank our sponsors (see right), and all of you who commemorate and celebrate International Women's Day in the Shoalhaven by your assistance or participation. Please join us in celebrating International Women's Day 2010.

Voices for Love and Justice

On Sunday 29th November people from all walks of life gathered to sing the Anthem entitled Love and Justice at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre. It was a community partnership between NSW TAFE, Illawarra Institute, Waminda, Illawarra Multicultural Services, and Nowra Neighbourhood Centre Inc. The event was held in the 16 Days against Domestic Violence and aimed to raise awareness for the need to create a safe community by bring us together and being heard.

Over 200 people sang the anthem. Aria award performer, Kavisha Mazzella, who wrote the song, sang with us. Other local Choirs also sang songs with the theme of love and justice. View the event on YouTube.
